Christmas Day and the Christmas period can be tough for many people for a variety of reasons, especially those who have to self-isolate after a positive covid test.
Dr Ruth Watson, clinical psychologist, and Jennifer Willbourn, psychological therapist, have share these tips to help anyone who might be struggling:
- Don't feel pressure to celebrate in the traditional way - it will feel like a very different day, so might be a good time to throw out the rule book and avoid comparing the day to your usual Christmas.
- Remind yourself that there will be lots of other people in the same situation, probably feeling similar emotions to you.
- If it's a tough day, it's ok just try to get through it, and hopefully there will be easier days ahead.
- Find a way to connect with others – plan a virtual or telephone call
- Plan ahead and buy yourself a treat, or treat yourself to something you have been saving
- Plan activities during the day to keep you occupied – a nice bath or a particular TV programme
- Play your favourite songs
- Stay off social media if this will be difficult
