Critical incident and trauma service

We provide specialist psychological support for Greater Manchester health and care staff affected by critical incidents or traumatic events in work.

The service, funded by NHS Greater Manchester, is for all health and care staff working in Greater Manchester – including all NHS colleagues working in primary care, secondary care and North West Ambulance Service; care homes and social care providers; as well as local authority and VCSE staff who work in health and social care.

We provide consultation, one-to-one and group support for individuals, teams, managers and wider healthcare systems. 

Health and care staff can self-refer or be referred by their line managers, HR or occupational health.

If you are concerned about your team following a critical incident or traumatic event

As a manager, you can contact us for support. We can provide:

  • Consultation with a staff member at the Hub to discuss your team’s needs and how we could support you.
  • Planning  workshop for your team, based on a their needs.
  • Planning a facilitated peer support or reflective spaces for your team, based on the team’s needs.

You can call the Hub directly or fill out this very brief form and the Hub will contact you within approx a fortnight.

 

'Ear for you'

A service for black, Asian and minority communities across Greater Manchester. The service is provided by Nestac, a charity specialising in cross-culture emotional support.

Jewish mental health support

This is a partnership between Jewish Action for Mental Health (JAMH) and Neshomo.

Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN)

Chinese mental health support (Wai Yin)

Wai Yin have developed a support group for Chinese men and women with mental distress and difficulties relating to a range of socio-cultural issues. They aim to provide professional support which tailors to different complex issues of mental health, sociocultural and financial difficulties. Training and support for services and exiles (TS4SE)

This cooperative works with refugee and migrant community groups, and local community groups who want to improve how they work with their diverse local populations. 

TS4SE are now providing regular briefings and train-the-trainer sessions, gathering user stories, and researching and developing sustainable new models of working remotely - or in person with social distancing.

They are also supporting smaller refugee-led community organisations, to develop remote befriending for isolated individuals, focusing on culturally specific health promotion and wellbeing messages. Call 07939 155525, email jules@ts4se.org.uk. Click here for more info.

Yaran Northwest

Yaran Northwest is not-for-profit organisation providing a variety of services to meet the needs of vulnerable adults, new immigrants, families and couples in Greater Manchester; who need urgent help with counselling, advocacy, recovery and wellbeing.

Here are some things that can support you if you've been affected by bereavement.

Greater Manchester Bereavement service: 0161 983 0902

This is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (until 8pm on Wednesday), except bank holidays.

Greater Manchester Bereavement Service is here for anyone who has been bereaved or affected by a death, no matter the cause of death or how long it’s been. If you’re grieving and need support, please give them a call or email. Their friendly bereavement practitioners are here to listen and help find the right support for you.

The service also has dedicated suicide bereavement practitioners to ensure that those bereaved or affected by suicide can speak to someone who will have a greater understanding of what they may be going through and help them access appropriate support.

During the covid pandemic, national funding helped set up staff wellbeing hubs across the country to support health and care colleagues affected. In Greater Manchester, we provided this service, known as the staff wellbeing service.

National funding ended in April 2023 and NHS Greater Manchester continued to fund the service for a further 12 months (until April 2024). A review of the service took place during 2023/24 which considered funding changes and the availability of other mental health and wellbeing services for health and care staff. The priority for NHS GM is a service that can provide timely and effective mental health support for health and care staff who have been affected by critical incidents or traumatic events in the workplace. As a result, the staff wellbeing service is nolonger in operation and has bee replaced with our new critical incident and trauma service.
