Becoming a smokefree hospital

From 1 April, all our hospital wards and units will be smokefree – meaning smoking won’t be allowed anywhere in or out of our hospitals.

It’s one of many ways that we’re helping to keep people healthy and safe, including our staff, patients, visitors, and local community.

We’ll help you stay smokefree

If you’re a patient on a ward and usually smoke, we have a variety of options to support you whilst in hospital. Please speak to any member of the ward team to discuss how we can support you.

Your support options

There’s lots of support to keep you smokefree. These include nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) such as patches, inhalators and lozenges and also, in some areas, vapes.

Our ward staff and treating tobacco dependency team will help you find the best option for you.

If you have any lighters, matches, or similar items, please hand these to a member of staff. We don’t allow these items on our wards because they are a fire risk. We will keep these items safe and return them to you when you leave.

Being smokefree is better for everyone

Every time you smoke a cigarette, your body is flooded with poisonous chemicals. It causes many diseases and increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. It’s not only dangerous to you, but to others around you.

It’s so important to keep our hospital smokefree. And we’re here to help you do it.

Where to go for further help:

We understand that quitting smoking can be really tough, especially if you’ve been smoking for a long time. You don’t have to do it alone—there’s lots of support available through the NHS.

If you need help, please talk to us, and we’ll help you access your local treating tobacco dependency service, in a way that supports your needs.
